The Michigan Travelers opened their District 3 play the same way they opened their LCAHL playoff play: with a 7-0 drubbing of their opponent. Not much to say. The Michigan Travelers were blanked by the Summit AA squad 5-0. Not much skating and not any hitting from the Travelers. Summit outshot MT 43-25 for the game.
Everyone's entitled to an off game. Here's hoping our boys get it back together for this weekend. It's a scrimmage against the highly-rated West Kent Hawks on Saturday and the opening round robin game of the LCAHL playoffs against Lapeer on Sunday.

There were thirty penalties, nineteen for the Belle Tire squad. Belle Tire head coach Michael Barbosa was given a game misconduct for BT exceeding the fifteen penalties in one game and Belle Tire player Alex Kolpacke was given a game misconduct for five penalties in one game.
The Travelers continued to give every indication that their three game swoon in Chicago may be over. They skated and hit with authority throughout the game against the older BT squad, despite missing two of their top players in Clint Bess (serving one game suspension) and Matt Grazza (sick). Once again MT forward Josh Ybarra was a force with his speed and his physical play, drawing five penalties in the process.
The Travelers' next game is a scrimmage against the mighty Summit Midget AA squad on Friday, 01/23/09, at 8:15pm at the GLSC. Keep up the good work, boys.

MT got two goals from Jimmy Gaydos and two assists from Matt Smartt. David Champine also scored and Mason Henige stopped thirty of thirty-three shots as the Pride outshot our Travelers 33-21, including a 9-1 advantage in the first period.
The tie greatly hampered MT's effort to place first in the LCAHL regular season. They have to root for the Michigan Jaguars to tie or beat the mighty Troy Sting on Thursday, January 8, 2009.
It wasn't the usual effort for the Travelers in their first live action after the holiday layoff. This is a team that pays attention to detail on the defensive end and the speed of the Pride allowed them to capitalize on MT breakdowns on several occasions. But, give our boys credit. They battled back all game and put themselves in a position to win until late in the game.
The Travelers finished the regular season at 8-2-4 and led the league in giving up less than two goals a game.

MT finally got things going late in the first period, but missed several breakaway chances to put their opponent away.
The victory marked the return of steady-Eddie defenseman Sal Pagano after a stint on the DL due to a broken arm. It didn't take long to show the MT faithful that Sal was his old shelf as he blasted a BW forward to the ice on his first shift. Welcome back, Sal!!!
The Travelers returned to the top of the LCAHL league standings, one point better than the Rattlers who recently celebrated their first victory over the Troy Sting. MT's next LCAHL league game is this Saturday against the Michigan Jags at the GLSC.
Michigan Travelers 2 - Fountain Park Flyers 1 (12/13/3008)
Anthony Galloway's goal on a pretty feed from Justin Kammo with 2:34 left in the game won it for the Michigan Travelers in a scrimmage game played at the GLSC. MT showed just enough interest on this Saturday afternoon to outlast the Flyers. Mason Henige and Jeff Ryan stopped twenty-five of twenty-six shots as the Travelers held a 31-26 advantage.
Josh Ybarra tipped in a power play goal midway in the first period to stake MT to a 1-0 lead. FP Flyer forward Case Henahan broke in alone and scored with a little less than seven minutes left in the second period to tie the game before Galloway's late game heroics.

Mason Henige stopped twenty-two of twenty-three shots as the Sting outshot MT 23-13. It was Henige's first loss of the season and couldn't have come at a worse time.
The Sting evened the series with our boys at 1-1-2, with MT enjoying a slight goals scored advantage of 6-5.
Michigan Travelers 1 - Rochester Rattlers 0 (12/7/2008)

Seconds later, Matt Smartt picked up a loose puck and avoided several Star players to give the Travelers their final margin of victory. The Travelers only needed a tie to advance, forcing the Stars to pull their netminder with the game tied. Mason Henige stopped sixteen of seventeen shots in gaining the victory.
Henige lost his shutour when the Stars, on an apparent high stick, tipped a point shot over the net and off the glass where Stars forward Nick Murphy slipped the puck just past Henige for what many thought would be the winning goal with just over three minutes left in the game. The Travelers outshot the much-improved Start 18-17 for the contest.
MT awaits the result of the Troy Sting/Livonia Knight game later tonight to find out their semi-final opponent.
Michigan Travelers 3 - Livonia Knights 0 (12/4/2008)

Jeff Ryan stopped all thirteen Knight shots for his second shutout of the season as MT outshot Livonia 17-13 for the contest.

Michigan Travelers 1 - Troy Sting 1 (12/3/2008)

Mason Henige stopped twenty-two of twenty-three shots as the Sting grossly outshot the Travelers 23-5 for the contest. Despite managing just five shots for the contest against a powerful team like the Sting, MT still found a way to put them in position for the win, before settling for the tie.

The goal ended two periods of frustration for the Summit, who couldn't break the MT defense and goaltending. Summit kept the pressure on MT throughout the third and were finally rewarded with the tournament championship.
MT turns their attention to the Silver Sticks Regional at the St. Clair Shores Arena next week where they's see some old friends and play in their former home. They open up with a game against a team named the Troy Sting. Hide the women and children. This is gonna be fun.

Early in the third, Smartt picked up a loose puck in the BT zone and ripped a wrister in the short side corner to restore the Travelers' three goal lead. Belle Tire pulled back to within two goals with seven minutes left in the game, but Henige and the stout MT defense held the fort for the victory.
The Travelers get a rematch with the formidable Summit AA squad tomorrow in the tournament championship. Good luck, boys.
Michigan Travelers 1 - Summit AA 3 (11/28/2008)

Midway in the first, Smartt tipped in his second goal on a point shot from Matt Grassa and MT led 2-0. With just thirty-four seconds left in the game, Sting forward Jesse Peterson chipped in a back-door one-timer on a pretty pass from Eric Rotonja to allow Troy to avoid their second consecutive loss to the Travelers. The equalizer came when Troy pulled their goalie for a six-on-four advantage after a controversial tripping call with 1:45 left.
Justin Kammo and Rodney Wynne scored for the Travelers, while Peterson had both Sting goals. Mason Henige stopped 38 of 40 shots for MT as the Sting outshot the Travelers 40-18 for the contest.
Troy took a 1-0 lead with 2:02 left in the second on Peterson's first of two goals. Kammo tied the game early in the third period on a superb effort by Mattie Smartt who battled two Sting players in the corner before sending the puck to a wide open Kammo in from of the Sting net. Wynne gave the Travelers a 2-1 lead midway through the third period before Peterson's late-game heroics.
If the first two games are any indication, both squads can expect many more exciting, well-played contests before the season is over.
The Travelers LCAHL record now stands at 2-1-2, while their overall record sits at 12-1-4. MT will battle the Garden City Goldwings this Wednesday at 8:00pm at the Garden City Ice Arena in a LCAHL league game.
Michigan Travelers 3 - Rochester Rattlers 4 (11/08/08)
Whether it was looking forward to their big game the next day or the usual Saturday afternoon doldrums, the Michigan Travelers were beat by an inspired Rochester Rattlers squad 4-3 in a LCAHL league contest played at Great Lakes Sports Center. Rattlers' Michael Paraskevin assisted on his team's first three goals as Rochester built a 4-1 lead through the first half of the second period and hung on for the victory. Chris Gagleard got the win in net.
Clint Bess, Jimmy Gaydos, and Justin Kammo scored for the Travelers who outshot the Rattlers 24-17 for the game.

MT jumped on Mt. Clemens in the first period outshooting them 19-4 and out scoring them 5-0. It was 8-0 before the five minute mark of the second period and the route was on. Give the Wolves credit. Playing without three key players and down by eight goals, they fought back to make the rest of the game competitive.

Michigan Travelers 3 - Troy Sting 1 (10/27/08)
Two big dogs from the east side squared off and it was the Michigan Travelers drawing first blood with a 3-1 victory over the Troy Sting at Great Lakes Sports Arena.
The Travelers got first period power play goals from defensemen Matt Grassa and Rodney Wynne and a third period insurance goal from leading scorer Mattie Smartt to offset a second period short-handed, breakaway tally by the Sting Eric Ritonja. Jeff Ryan was his usual stellar self in net stopping thirty-one shots as the Sting outshot the Travelers 32-17 for the contest.
MT had to overcome a Sting-dominated second period where they had only one shot on goal, and had to kill a two man disadvantage for over a minute and a five minute major in the latter part of the third period. Kudos to the Travelers' penalty killing that held the Sting scoreless on six power play opportunities, including the five minute major.
The MT team learned a couple things from this early contest. Special team play is very important, the Sting forwards are real fast and their forechecking is top rate, and as long as the MT defense and goaltending continue to be strong, they will be in every game. Congrats to the Travelers on the big win.
